About

Lucy Clemenger Architects is a Melbourne-based architecture and interior design practice creating thoughtful, enduring and highly individual buildings and spaces across residential, hospitality and commercial projects.

Founded by Lucy Clemenger, the practice is known for a refined yet warm approach to architecture and interiors, with an emphasis on context, materiality, natural light and the relationship between buildings and landscape. We believe good architecture should feel deeply connected to its place and to the people who inhabit it.

Our work ranges from the careful transformation of heritage and existing buildings, to new houses, regional projects, interiors and boutique commercial developments. Rather than applying a particular style, we approach each project individually, responding to its history, setting and opportunities with curiosity and imagination.

Sustainability, adaptation and longevity are fundamental to our thinking. We value what already exists and look for opportunities to retain, reuse and reimagine buildings and materials, while creating spaces that are resilient and designed to last.

Our studio brings together architecture and interior design with a shared attention to detail, proportion, colour, texture and craftsmanship. We work collaboratively with clients, consultants, builders, and landscape architects, recognising that the best projects are the result of many people working towards a shared ambition.

Working with LCA

Working with Lucy Clemenger Architects is a highly personal and collaborative process. We take the time to understand what you need, how you want to use your spaces and how you want them to feel. Your team will guide you through what can be a complex process, providing clear advice, creative thinking and support at every stage.

From the first conversation through to completion, LCA acts as a trusted advisor and advocate. We guide you through the complexities of design and construction, helping to manage budget, programme, consultants, approvals and the build. Every project involves hundreds of decisions. Our role is to filter the options, provide considered recommendations and make the process feel enjoyable and manageable, while ensuring the original vision is carried through to the smallest detail.

Our holistic approach to architecture and interior design allows us to create buildings and spaces that feel cohesive, individual and deeply connected to the people who use them. As a client, you will feel listened to, excited and well looked after throughout the journey. The result should be more than a beautiful building or interior: it should reflect your personality and aspirations, respond intelligently to its history and context, function effortlessly and continue to bring joy long after the project is complete.

Testimonials

The purpose of building our new Cellar Door was to sell more wine, give our customers a better experience and to help showcase our beautiful site.

The design has delivered on all these points while using materials that are sustainable and locally sourced, reflecting our businesses values.

We gave LCA a comprehensive design brief but the design they came up with is above and beyond anything we ever imagined. The use of space to create both a large presence and a feeling of intimacy is often commented on.
Since opening we have tripled our visitation from 8,000 to 24,000 per year.

I first approached Lucy about a proposed renovation of my terrace house in Windsor. Whilst progressing that job, the redevelopment of a factory next door commenced which uncovered serious structural issues with my terrace. That started quite a journey, with a time pressed developer next door and some serious engineering work requiring, eventually, the complete replacement of the entire side wall of my 3-story terrace.

We are still on the journey, but Lucy and her team have been instrumental in navigating through a very complex set of planning, engineering, architectural and building requirements to rectify the structural issues which have allowed us to now move on to the renovation.

Lucy’s architectural expertise speaks for itself in the many projects she has delivered. What I have found is that this is matched by meticulous planning, a cost-conscious approach to design and a tenacity and attention to detail which enables her, and her team, to deliver in the most trying of circumstances.

I have completed a number of projects and collaborated with Lucy Clemenger Architects as their chosen builder. She is a true professional who has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Her prompt and direct communication style makes projects clear and easy to complete, her flare and eye for design has made our team here at The Building and Construction Company Pty Ltd very proud of the works we have completed for her projects.

We have no hesitation in highly recommending Lucy Clemenger Architects and their services and would welcome any potential clients who would like to further discuss her previous projects.

Luke Cotton
Director, The Building and ConstructionCompany Pty Ltd

Lucy’s challenge was to contemporise the sadly dated interior of a house that was built to exacting standards in 2006. As such, there were inherent building constraints imposed on Lucy and her wonderful team. From the outset, her professionalism, attention to detail and clear documentation ensured that the project ran smoothly. Lucy was flexible when it came to suggesting options but firm when it came to the design elements that mattered. Her recommended builder was an excellent choice as they shared the same high ideals and worked very well together.

Lucy’s ability to combine her considerable architectural AND interior design skills means that we now have very appealing spaces enhanced by superb finishes, furniture and fittings. Consequently, we just really enjoy time in our home. Obviously, we would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Lucy Clemenger Architects and would be happy to elaborate further.
